Abu Humaid Sa'idi reported: I came to Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) with a cup of milk from Naqi' which had no cover over it, whereupon he said: Why did you not cover it? - even if you had covered it only with a stick. Abu Humaid said that he had been ordered that waterskins be tied during the night, and the doors be closed during the night.

Jabir b 'Abdullah reported: We were with Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) and lie asked for water. A person said: Allaah's Messenger, may we not give you Nabidh to drink? He (the Prophet) said: Yes (you may). He (the narrator) said: Then that person went out speedily and brought a cup containing Nabidh, whereupon Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Why did you not cover it? - even if it is with a wood. He said that then he drank it.

Jabir reported that a person who was known as Abu Humaid brought for him (the Prophet) a cup of milk from al-Naqi'. Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said to him: Why did you not cover it even with a wood across it?

Jabir reported Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: Cover vessels, waterskins, close the doors and extinguish the lamps, for the Satan does not loosen the waterskin, does not open the door and does not uncover the vessels. And if one amongst you fails to find (something) to cover it well, he should cover it by placing (a piece of) wood across it. Qutaiba did not mention the closing of the doors in the hadith transmitted by him.

Jabir reported Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: Shut the doors; the rest of the hadith is the same but with a slight variation of wording: Cover the utensils, and further said: It (the mouse) may set fire to the clothes of the residents of the house.

This hadith has been reported on the authority of Jabir through another chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of words:" The mouse may set the house on fire over its inhabitants."

Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) having said: When the wings of the night (spread) or it is night, restrain your children (from going out), for the Satan is abroad at that time, and when a part of the night is passed, free them and shut the doors. making mention of God's name, for the Satan does not open a closed door; and tighten the (mouths of waterskins and mention the name of Allaah, cover your utensils and mention the name of Allaah even though you should just put something on them, and extinguish your lamps.

This hadith is reported on the authority of Laith b. Sa'd with the same chain of transmitters, but with a slight variation in wording (and that is that) he (the Prophet) said: There is a day in a year when descends the pestilence; at the end of the hadith Laith said that the non Arabs save themselves from it in Kanun Awwal (this is the month of December).

Abu Musa reported that a house was burnt down in Medina during the night over its inhabitants. When their matter was reported to Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam), he said; This fire is an enemy of yours. So when you go to sleep, extinguish it.
